Top Questions About Tubing the Saco River

  • Which Saco River tubing trip is best for my family or group?

For most families, mixed-age groups, and first-time visitors, the 1-Mile Float is the easiest place to start. It’s a mellow Saco River tubing trip with sandy beaches and plenty of time to relax, without committing the whole day. If your crew are strong swimmers and want more time on the water, the 3-mile or full-day options are great next steps.

  • What is the Saco River like – is it good for beginners and kids?

This stretch of the Saco River in North Conway averages around 3 feet deep, with a mix of calm, shallow sections and a few small, splashy rapids on certain routes. Our local team runs these floats all summer and will walk you through what to expect that day, including which trips are better for younger kids, older adults, or confident swimmers.

  • How long will our Saco River float take and how much time should we plan?

Time on the water depends on river levels, but in general the 1-Mile Float takes about 1–3 hours, 3-mile trips run about 3–5 hours, and full-day floats are usually 5–7 hours. Plan extra time for parking, check-in, and shuttles so you are not rushed and can enjoy a full, relaxed river day.

  • Do we need to book Saco River tubing in advance, or can we just walk in?

In peak summer and on weekends, Saco River tubing and kayak trips often sell out, so we strongly recommend booking online ahead of time. Reserving your time and trip length lets you plan the rest of your North Conway day around it and helps avoid the stress of driving out and finding no spots left.

  • What do you provide, and what should we bring for our river day?

For tubing, we provide your tube, life jacket, and shuttle, plus access to restrooms, changing areas, and other on-site facilities, with options to rent gear caddies, cooler tubes, and lockers for valuables. You’ll want to bring secure river shoes, swimsuits and quick-dry clothing, sun protection, drinking water, and any snacks or picnic items you’d like for the beaches and sandbars along the way.

  • Can we bring our dog on the Saco River?

Yes, Saco River Tubing is a dog-friendly adventure, and many guests float with their pups each summer. Dogs are welcome on shuttles, and you can reserve a special gear caddy so your dog has a stable spot to ride and relax beside your tube; we simply ask that you keep them under control and follow local leash and river etiquette.

  • What happens if river levels are low or the weather changes?

River levels and weather on the Saco can affect how fast you float and how much walking you may do in shallow spots, so we monitor conditions closely and update guests before their trip. If levels or forecasts mean a particular route is not a good fit for your group, our staff will recommend the best option for that day and talk you through any adjustments so you know exactly what to expect.

  • Is Saco River tubing crowded, and when is the best time for a more relaxed float?

Summer weekends can feel lively on the river, especially on the most popular floats, while midweek mornings are usually quieter and more laid back. If you’re hoping for a mellow family float with kids or grandparents, we suggest booking earlier in the day or midweek when possible and we will help you choose the trip that best matches the vibe you’re looking for.
